Dialectical Behavior Therapy (or DBT) provides clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships.
DBT was initially developed to treat suicidal individuals and those with Borderline Personality Disorder, however it has since shown to be an effective treatment for a wide variety of other disorders such as addiction, depression, PTSD, and eating disorders.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy involves the therapist working together with the client to set specific goals that are personally meaningful to the client, while working on ways to remove harmful behaviors and replace them with more effective and life-enhancing behaviors. In this way, DBT helps enhance their capabilities by teaching them behavioral skills with a particular focus on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills help our clients to better navigate situations and challenges that occur in everyday life.
